Pershing Thomas Pressley, 95, died earlier this year at St Francis Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. He was born January 23, 1922 in Anchorage, KY; the son of Robert C. Pressley, Sr. and Bessie T. (Thomas) Pressley.
He married Jeanne (Henry) Pressley on November 10, 1957. He was proceeded in death by Jeanne, his wife of 52 years and a son Bob Pressley 55.
He is survived by sons, Tom Pressley, Jr. (Diane), Dan Pressley, Rich Pressley (Johanna); Daughter in law Andrea Pressley (Bob); 7 grandchildren, 2 step grandchildren and 9 step great grandchildren.
Tom graduated Salutatorian, from DuPont Manual High School in Louisville, KY in 1941, receiving the Bausch and Lomb Honorary Science Award. It is during this time Tom discovered his love for health and fitness, body-building and weight-training. From his teens, it became a lifelong passion and joy even into his 90’s.
Tom was a decorated WW II Air Force officer, B-17 pilot and honorably discharged veteran, flying with the 341st Bomber Squadron, 97th Bomber Group. Tom flew 14 combat bombing missions in Air Combat Balkans, Central Europe, Po Valley, North Appennines (Italy) and the Rhineland. Tom was promoted to the rank of 1st Lieutenant, receiving the EAME Theater ribbon with 5 Battle Stars, Air Medal with Oak Leaf Cluster (Bronze), American Theater ribbon, WW II Victory ribbon and 1 Overseas Service Bar.
Tom graduated from the University of Louisville in 1952 and the Medical College of Virginia in 1954 with degrees in Physical Medicine. Tom was the Director of Physical Medicine at Reid Memorial Hospital and Friends Fellowship Community in Richmond IN, from 1956 to 1969 and 1968-1970, respectively. Tom served as Director of Physical Therapy and Sports Medicine at St Francis Hospital from 1970 to 1992. During his service Tom utilized his expertise, along with former University of Indianapolis President, Dr. Gene Sease to create the university’s Physical Therapy and Sport Medicine program establishing Bachelor’s and Graduate degree programs for this field. Tom loved being a Physical Therapist serving until he retired at age 72.
Tom was also an ardent reader and gifted, prolific poet and storyteller. He also loved driving his Cadillacs and other cars, taking many car rides and trips with his devoted wife Jeannie, by his side.
But most important to his Family, Tom was a devout follower of Jesus Christ, a faithful and devoted
husband to his wife Jeanne of 52 years and a stalwart, loving, caring and self-sacrificing father to his 4 sons, ALL HIS LIFE. We praise the Lord for the privilege of being his sons and delight that after decades of faithfulness to Jesus and to each of us, he is home and rejoicing “…with joy unspeakable, full of glory!” We anticipate future joy in seeing him and our dear mother, brother and family again, united together in Christ with this same joy unspeakable, full of glory! Thank you, O God, for our precious, precious father!
Memorial Services will be held at Community Church of Greenwood, Family Room 1477 West Main Street, Greenwood IN 46142 from 4:00 PM to 6:00 PM Thursday, March 8, 2018, Calling is from 4:00 PM to 4:30 PM. Private burial will be at Greenwood Cemetery on Friday March 9, 2018 at 10:00 AM. It is requested that donations be made in lieu of cards, flowers, or as a gift of appreciation to assist with final expenses and transition expenses for Dan Pressley, who left employment to become Tom’s full-time caregiver at home since 2014.
